- 1. ¶ BETTER is the poor man who walks in his integrity than the rich man who is perverse in his ways.
- 2. ¶ He who has no knowledge of his own soul, it is not good for him; and he who is hasty with his feet sins.
- 3. ¶ The folly of a man perverts his ways; he frets in his heart against the LORD.
- 4. ¶ Wealth makes many friends; but a poor man is deserted by his friends.
- 5. ¶ A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he who speaks lies shall not escape.
- 6. ¶ Many serve in the presence of a prince; he gives gifts even to those who are bad.
- 7. All the brothers of the poor hate him; also his friends go far from him. He who makes mischief with his words is insincere.
- 8. ¶ He who gets wisdom loves his own soul; he who keeps faithfulness shall find good.
- 9. ¶ A false witness shall not be unpunished; and he who speaks lies shall perish.
- 10. ¶ To live in luxury is not fitting for a fool; much less is it seemly for a servant to rule over princes.
- 11. ¶ The discretion of a man is shown by his patience; he glories when his iniquity is removed.
- 12. ¶ The king’s wrath is like the roaring of a lion; but his favor is like dew upon grass.
- 13. ¶ A foolish son is a disgrace to his father; and the contentions of a wife are like drippings.
- 14. ¶ House and riches are the inheritance from fathers; but a wife is betrothed to a man from the LORD.
- 15. ¶ Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep; and a proud man shall suffer hunger.
- 16. ¶ He who keeps the law keeps his own soul; but he who despises right ways shall die.
- 17. ¶ He who has pity upon the poor is a companion of the LORD; and he shall be repaid according to his works.
- 18. ¶ Chasten your son while there is hope, and let not your soul share his dishonor.
- 19. ¶ A man of great wrath shall suffer harm; the more he is hostile the more he increases his burden.
- 20. ¶ Hear counsel and receive instruction that you may be wise in your ways.
- 21. ¶ There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD shall stand firm.
- 22. ¶ The longing of a man is to do good; and a poor man is better than a rich man who lies.
- 23. ¶ Reverence for the LORD leads to life; and he who is satisfied with it shall abide; he shall not be visited with evil.
- 24. ¶ A sluggard hides his hands in his bosom and will not even try to bring them to his mouth again.
- 25. ¶ When an evil man is scourged, a wise man takes heed; and when a wise man is reproved, he will gain understanding.
- 26. ¶ He who plunders his father and grieves his mother is a son who causes shame and brings reproach.
- 27. ¶ Wait, my son, and hear the instruction, and do not forget the words of knowledge.
- 28. ¶ An ungodly witness scorns justice; and the mouth of the wicked devours him.
- 29. ¶ Grief is prepared for those who scoff at justice, and a scourge for foolish people.
